AL activists, police foil BNP rally in N’ganj
Law enforcement officials and ruling Awami League members allegedly foiled a BNP meeting in Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila yesterday.
According to BNP members, a 101-member executive committee of the Kanchan municipal unit had recently been formed, and an introductory rally was scheduled to take place at 10:00am in the Charpara area.
However, around 50 law enforcement officials arrived at the venue at 2:00am and instructed BNP members not to hold the event, said Kanchan municipal unit BNP President Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan.
Later in the morning, AL, Jubo League, and Chhatra League members surrounded the venue with sticks and local weapons, making it impossible for the BNP to hold its event.
According to Mujibur, AL members later held a separate event next to the BNP's planned location.
Golam Rasul Koli, organising secretary of the Kanchan municipal unit AL, claimed that approximately 500 AL members took to the streets to prevent any anarchy from the BNP.
Narayanganj's senior assistant superintendent of police Abir Hossain said police did not prohibit anyone from holding the event and were instead vigilant to prevent any violence.
