Act responsibly when using firearms: IGP Baharul

Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam has instructed all field-level officers to act responsibly in using firearms, noting that any deployment of arms must be lawful, risk-sensitive, and strictly based on necessity.
Speaking at a virtual meeting with Metropolitan Police Commissioners, Range DIGs, and District SPs from the Police Headquarters today, the IGP emphasised that the authority to use firearms is clearly defined by the Ministry of Home Affairs and must be exercised within those limits.
"Police personnel must carry weapons during patrols or when dealing with armed criminals, extremists, or in insurgency-prone areas. But the use of force must always be proportional and carefully assessed to avoid any undue risk," he said.
Referring to the ongoing review of firearm protocols, he added, "The discussion raised on August 5 about reviewing police weapon use is strictly in the context of crowd control, such as processions and assemblies. The necessity of lethal arms in such situations is under valid scrutiny. This is the area currently being examined."
The IGP also ordered legal action against licensed gun holders who failed to deposit their firearms in line with government directives.
He said officers at the field level must initiate cases against violators to ensure accountability.
Earlier in the meeting, the IGP called on all units of the police -- metropolitan, district, highway, railway, tourist, river, and other specialised wings -- to work in coordination to ensure a secure and festive environment ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
He directed police to ensure unhindered transport of sacrificial animals, prevent the forced movement of livestock between markets, and avoid setting up cattle markets along highways.
Officers were also instructed to stay alert against counterfeit currency, mugging, and extortion, and to step up security in shopping malls and marketplaces.
He urged police personnel to carry out their duties sincerely to help people celebrate Eid in a joyful and safe environment.
