1 killed, 6 hurt as BNP factions clash

At least one person was killed and six others were injured in a clash between two factions of BNP over formation of new committees at Baraiyarhat, Chattogram yesterday morning.

The body of Javed, 40, bore multiple stab wounds, said Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex sources.

The leaders and activists -- who were excluded from the new committees -- clashed with the supporters of newly-appointed leadership, said Sabbir Mohammad Selim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jorarganj Police Station.

Despite the local administration imposing Section 144 from 8:00am yesterday to 8:00am today to prevent unrest, BNP activists engaged in violent confrontations.

On March 24, the BNP announced the convening committees for Baraiyarhat and Mirsarai municipalities.

North District BNP President Golam Akbar Khandaker was appointed convener, while Nurul Amin, also known as Kala Amin, was named member secretary. However, another faction led by Nurul Amin, also known as Chairman Amin, opposed the decision and began demonstrations.

According to locals, tensions had been simmering since Monday night, with multiple incidents of chase-and-counter-chase between rival groups.

Mirsarai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahfuza Jerin said, "Intelligence reports indicated a possible clash ahead of the March 26 programme, prompting the imposition of Section 144."

Additional police and army personnel had been deployed to restore order, she added.
