Want to oversee development activities of railways: Lawmakers at parliamentary body meeting

Lawmakers today at a meeting of a parliamentary body said they want to oversee the development activities of railways in their respective constituencies.

As such the MPs have asked for information about the development work of railways in their respective constituencies.

The meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on railways ministry was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, a ruling Awami League MP, in the chair.

According to the working paper of the meeting, it was seen that lawmakers in the previous meeting expressed their opinion that they would supervise the development work of the railway in his constituency.

As part of the progress in implementing the recommendations, the ministry informed the committee that information on the development work of the railway would be provided to the members of the standing committee.

The ministry also said the concerned project managers would assist the MPs in supervising the work.

The chairman of the committee raised this issue in today's meeting.

He told the meeting that the members of the standing committee are working for the development of the railways.

He also expressed disappointment over the sorry state of the Chattogram railway station.

Saifuzzaman, a member of the committee at the time, said condition of many bus stations is better than the Chattogram rail station.

Meanwhile, in the meeting, the parliamentary committee recommended the selection of contractors through international competition without relying on any particular country for the implementation of railway development projects and procurement of equipment.

The committee recommended the adoption of a profitable project after examining the feasibility of the Railway Welfare Trust.

Railways Minister and committee member--Nurul Islam Sujan, Asaduzzaman Nur, Shafiqul Islam Shimul, Shafiqul Azam Khan, Gazi Mohammad Shah Nawaz and Nadira Yasmin Joly were present at the meeting.
