AL-backed candidate Merina Jahan wins Sirajganj-6 by-polls

Awami League-backed candidate Merina Jahan has been elected as the lawmaker of Sirajganj-6 by-election by a margin.

Jahan won the Sirajganj-6 constituency with 1,10,580 votes, defeating Jatiya Party candidate Muktar Hossain, who got 535 votes. Independent candidate Humayun Kabir meanwhile got 343 votes.

A total of 1,11,458 votes were cast in a constituency of 4,20,780 voters (26 percent) in Sirajganj-6 by election, reports our Pabna correspondent.

Sirajganj district Election Officer Md Shohidul Islam said although the turnout of voters was poor, the election was held in a peaceful manner at 160 polling centres, amidst tight security. The by-polls were held using electronic voting machines (EVMs), he said.

Lawmaker of Sirajganj-6 constituency Hasibur Rahman Swapon passed away in September this year in Turkey, leaving the seat vacant.
