Woman takes own life after AI-edited video shared with family

A case has been filed after a woman took her own life after an "obscene" video edited using AI with her likeness was circulated among family and relatives in Lalmonirhat.
The victim is Sultana Parvin, 20, of Aditmari upazila, said police.
Police said Sultana took her own life by tying a veil around her neck at her parents' house on Sunday noon.
Her husband, Ashraful Islam Anik, is an expatriate in Japan.
Her mother Firoza Begum filed a case in this regard against Anik and his family members with Aditmari Police Station on Thursday night, said its officer-in-charge Ali Akbar.
Police recovered her body and conducted an autopsy at the Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue on Sunday afternoon.
Sultana also left behind a note where she accused Anik's sister's husband, a Portuguese expatriate Mohammad Nahin Sheikh Mridul for sharing the video.
Her mother Firoza Begum said Anik and Sultana got married ten months ago.
She said, "We had given our daughter in marriage to a Japanese expatriate with high hopes. The son-in-law Anik, his sister's husband Mridul, and his relatives are responsible for our daughter's suicide. I have filed a case with the police."
The victim's brother, Alimul Islam said, "Mridul had spread an objectionable video of my sister from a fake WhatsApp ID. The video was created using AI technology. This video created a misunderstanding. Anik stopped communicating with my sister. He threatened to divorce her. My sister took her own life because she couldn't bear it."
Anik in a video message said, "My wife Sultana had an argument with my sister's husband Mridul. Because of him, there was unrest in our family. Unable to bear the mental pain, Sultana took her own life."
Meanwhile, Mridul in a video message said, "Anik was in a relationship with another girl. He married Sultana under family pressure. I did not send the video to anyone. After getting the video I just showed it to my wife. Anik and his family members tortured Sultana mentally. That is why Sultana took her own life," he said.
Aditmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ali Akbar said police are investigating the case.
