Teacher’s assault: HC orders judicial probe
The High Court yesterday ordered a judicial enquiry into the allegation of humiliation of a college teacher in Narail on June 17.
The Narail chief judicial magistrate has been asked to conduct the probe and submit the findings to the HC in six weeks.
In a video clip that went viral last month, some students and locals were seen forcing Swapan Kumar Biswas, acting principal of Mirzapur United Degree College in Narail, to wear a garland made of shoes.
Yesterday, the HC also directed the government authorities concerned to provide security and medical support to Swapan and his family members.
The court also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain why their failure to prevent such occurrences in presence of local administration officials and police should not be declared illegal.
The home ministry secretary, inspector general of police, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police in Narail and officer-in-charge of Narail Sadar Police Station are respondents to the rule.
The HC bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice SM Maniruzzaman delivered the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK).
During hearing, ASK lawyer ZI Khan Panna told the court that Swapan's humiliation would not have happened if those who humiliated teachers Shaymal Kanti Nag in Narayanganj and Hridoy Mondal in Munshiganj were given exemplary punishment.
Lawyers Aneek R Haque and Shahinuzzaman Shahin also represented the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Samarendranath Biswas represented the state.
