Shopkeepers by day, muggers by night

During daylight hours, they work regular jobs but as night falls they gather together, prowl the city streets with sharp weapons and mug people.

This is what a police official said about five people arrested from Mirpur-10 last night on charge of mugging people.

The arrestees are Shahadat Ali Swapno, 26, Sakib, 18, Al Amin alias Mahin, 20, Md Antu, 24 and Sadhin Rezaul 22, said Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station.

The OC said Shahadat, an employee of a shoe shop, is accused in five cases with different police stations and Sakib is a worker at a welding workshop and is accused in three cases.

Antu, an employee of a decorator shop and Mahin, another employee of a clothes shop are accused in two cases while Swadhin, who drives a battery-run auto rickshaw, is accused in one case, he said.

Filing of a case is underway.
