Shammo murder: Three placed on six-day remand

A Dhaka court today placed three men on six-day remand each in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo at Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13.
The accused are Tamim Hawlader, 30, Samrat Mallic, 28, and Palash Sardar, 28.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza passed the order after Taufiq Hasan, a sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
In the remand plea, the investigating officer said the accused were directly involved in the killing and needed to be interrogated to gather crucial information.
No defence lawyers appeared for the accused in court. The trio, however, claimed innocence, telling the court they had been falsely implicated in the case to harass them.
They appealed for the remand prayer to be rejected, but the magistrate denied their pleas and granted six days' remand each.
Earlier, on May 14, they were sent to jail after being produced before another Dhaka court.
Shammo, 25, was the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
His brother filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing 8–10 unidentified persons.
According to fellow student Ashraful Islam Rafi, Shammo, originally from Ullapara in Sirajganj, was a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018–19 session) and lived in Room No. 222 of the dormitory.
Rafi said Shammo was riding his motorcycle at Suhrawardy Udyan around 11:45pm on May 13 when it collided with another bike, sparking an altercation.
During the scuffle, unknown individuals stabbed him in the right thigh before fleeing the scene, he said.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
