The investigation committee formed to probe the death of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo has submitted its final report to the university's vice-chancellor.

Professor Md Siddiqur Rahman Khan, dean of the Faculty of Arts and convener of the committee, formally handed over the report to Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan at the VC's office yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, students from the Institute of Education and Research (IER) yesterday staged a sit-in protest in front of the DU proctor's office, demanding updates on the report of the investigation committee, which the DU administration formed.

The protest began around 11:45am and continued for two hours.

When asked, Prof Siddiqur Rahman Khan told The Daily Star that the report had been submitted to the vice-chancellor, who would decide when it would be made public.

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) also held a sit-in in front of the VC's office yesterday, demanding justice for Shammo's murder and the resignation of the VC and proctor for failing to ensure a safe campus.

At the demonstration, GC Roy Shahos, president of the JCD DU unit, said, "Shammo was murdered on campus. It has been 13 days, yet we have not seen any visible steps toward justice. The VC and the proctor have failed to provide any satisfactory answers."

On the night of May 13, Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research, was stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan by a group of individuals. He was rescued by classmates and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.
