Security guard dies in shipbreaking yard

A security guard died after falling down the stairs of a scrap vessel in Chattogram's Sitakunda area yesterday.
The victim is Nazim Uddin, 34, of Boro Takia area under Mirsarai upazila.
Nazim Uddin worked as a security guard at NB Steel Shipbreaking Yard in North Salimpur of Sitakunda upazila since July last.
Nazim lost balance and fell down while coming down the stairs after serving on the rooftop of the ship around 8:30am, said Tofayel Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station.
A team from the yard rescued him and took him to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Nazim was declared dead around 11:00am while undergoing treatment at the ICU, he said.
His body was sent to the morgue for autopsy, the OC added.
Taslim Uddin, owner of NB Steel, told The Daily Star, "We will give compensation of Tk 2 lakh to the family of the deceased as per labour law."
"Besides, we will give another Tk 5 lakh to his family on humanitarian grounds," he added.
