RU student stabbed on campus

A student of Rajshahi University (RU) was stabbed near the university's Syed Amir Ali Hall last night.

The victim, Arafat Shawon, was a student at Department of Social Work of the 2018–19 academic session who recently completed his undergraduate degree.

Arafat was walking towards his hall around 8:30pm when a group of muggers allegedly intercepted him beside the hall premises.

Quoting the victim, Mehedi Sajeeb, a fellow student and former departmental coordinator said, the attackers attempted to snatch his mobile phone, leading to a scuffle. During the altercation, Arafat was stabbed twice in the abdomen. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Despite his injuries, Shawon managed to reach the university medical centre on foot. He was later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Mehedi said, "Such an attack within the university campus is deeply alarming. We urge the administration to take immediate action."

Contacted, Professor Mahbubur Rahman, proctor of the university termed the incident "very unfortunate" and expressed concern over its occurrence within campus grounds.

"The matter was raised in today's meeting. We must remain vigilant to prevent such incidents in future," he said.

" It is important to find out exactly what happened and why. We are investigating whether this was purely a mugging or if other motives were involved."

Abdul Malek, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station confirmed that no official complaint had been filed at the time of reporting.

"We will initiate an investigation upon receiving a complaint," he said. "At this moment I am heading for the spot where the incident occurred. According to available information, the victim is out of danger," he added.
