Rab arrests five members of vehicle theft gang in Narayanganj
Rab claims to have arrested five members of an organised vehicle theft gang, including its mastermind, during a raid in Narayanganj yesterday.
The arrestees are: Azim Uddin (38), Rafique Ullah (26), Md Selim (50), Kamrul Hasan (26) and Omar Faruk (25). They all hail from the Noakhali district.
During the raid at Narayanganj's Fatullah, Rab recovered three stolen pick-up vans, an auto-rickshaw, a pistol, one bullet, and four sharp weapons from their possession, Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of Rab's legal and media wing, told a press briefing at Rab media centre in Dhaka today.
The gang, which has at least 20 members, has stolen more than 100 vehicles in the last four to five years, he added.
According to Rab, the gang splits into groups. One of its groups first carries out a recce and selects their targeted vehicles while another group, having members with technical expertise, carries out the steal, sometimes sedating the drivers.
The gang members sometimes communicate with the vehicle owners and handed their vehicles after taking ransom. Sometimes they dismantle the vehicles to sell the parts, Rab said.
The gang also sells the vehicles to others using fake documents after changing color, engine, and chassis numbers.
