Police vehicle carrying Ivy comes under attack, crude bombs exploded

Salina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, has been taken to the office of the district superintendent of police after her arrest.
On the way, the police vehicle carrying her came under attack. Bricks and stones were hurled. At that time, crude bombs were also exploded.
Eyewitnesses said the incident took place today, Friday, around 6:30am in front of the (former) Greenledge Bank on Bangabandhu Road in the city.
Several people, including two police personnel, were injured by the brickbats. A member of the Sadar Model Police Station was seen being taken to the 300-bed hospital in Narayanganj with serious injuries.
Nasir Uddin Ahmad, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station, initially confirmed to journalists that two police personnel had been injured.
The vehicle carrying Mayor Ivy was at the front, and behind her, her supporters were marching, demanding her release.
Right after the procession crossed the intersection in front of the former Greenledge Bank, a group of youths began hurling bricks and stones at them from the entrance of the Amlapara Swarnopatti area.
At that time, The Daily Star's correspondent saw two crude bombs explode.
The police then sped up the vehicle and headed swiftly towards the superintendent's office.
The attackers later held a sudden procession in the city. During this time, they chanted slogans against the Awami League and Ivy.
Supporters of Ivy alleged that BNP activists and supporters were responsible for the attack.
Later, in a briefing at the gate of the police superintendent's office, Additional Superintendent of Police Tarek Al Mehdi said they were in the front vehicle. He said he was unaware of the attack that took place at the rear. "Details will be informed later," he added.
Earlier, Salina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), was arrested by police around 5:45am. After an overnight drive, she was arrested from her residence in Deovogh.
Ivy is an accused in at least five cases filed with multiple police stations over the murders and attacks that took place during the July uprising.
Ivy, who was elected mayor of NCC for three consecutive terms, was also the senior vice president of the district Awami League.
