Noncompliance of orders: ‘We are fed up’
A High Court bench yesterday expressed disappointment at government high officials for not complying with its orders and refused to hear a contempt of court petition against a secretary.
"We are fed up. Many of our orders are not implemented. We pass orders for the welfare of the country and nation, but they don't pay any heed to the orders we issue at different times. If our orders are not implemented, they will end up in the trash bin," said the bench of Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice AKM Rabiul Hassan.
"If we ask them to appear before us in connection with contempt of court petitions, they feel annoyed. This court is a constitutional institution and the government officials are bound as per the constitution to comply with our orders. If our orders are not executed, how will this run?"
The HC bench made the remarks as lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan placed a contempt of court petition against the secretary of environment, forest and climate change.
The bench then refused to hear the contempt of court petition and asked Khurshid to move it before another bench.
Khurshid told The Daily Star that 23 of his clients submitted an application to the environment ministry secretary in 2019 to reinstate them to their jobs at a ministry project. But the secretary did not respond to the application.
Following a writ petition, the HC in 2019 directed the secretary to dispose of the application within a month.
As the secretary did not dispose of the application, a contempt of court petition was filed with the HC last year.
"The bench expressed serious anger and disappointment at government high officials," he said.
