The High Court today cleared the way for resuming the publication of decades-old weekly "Ekota".

The court stayed the government order that in 2013 banned the publication of the Ekota for not regularly submitting its copies to the Department of Films and Publications.

The HC bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mubina Asaf passed the stay order following a writ petition filed by the Ekota's Managing Editor Muslem Uddin and moved by Advocate Hasan Tarique Chowdhury challenging the government order of the ban, Deputy Attorney General Md Shafiqur Rahman told The Daily Star.

He said there is no legal bar for the authorities concerned to resume the publication of the weekly Ekota following the HC's stay order.

Following the same petition, the HC earlier issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the government's decision to cancel Ekota's enrolment as media should not be declared illegal.

The rule is still pending before the HC, DAG Shafiqur added.
