Manzurul Ahsan Khan ‘assaulted’ by police
Veteran Politician Manzurul Ahsan Khan was allegedly assaulted by police while he was taking part in a rally with leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Hawkers' Union near Bahadur Shah Park in the capital yesterday.
Manzurul, also adviser of the union, claimed police assaulted him when he was standing near the park and waiting for the rally to begin.
He said after the incident, some police officials of Sutrapur Police Station contacted him, and apologized for obstructing the rally, saying "it was a misunderstanding".
They, however, denied the allegation of assault.
Organisers said the council of Sutrapur unit of Bangladesh Hawkers' Union was being held yesterday.
However, the programme was cut short as police obstructed them.
The union has condemned the assault on Manzurul Ahsan Khan, in a press release issued by Rahim Ullah Rakib, its office secretary.
About the incident, Joly Talukder, general secretary of CPB, said police do not think while violating the constitutional rights of citizens.
Contacted, Mohammad Moinul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur Police Station, said, "Police barred the rally as the organisers did not take permission for it. But the assault allegation was not true."
