Mahbubul Haque Chisty denied bail in 3 graft cases

A Dhaka court today rejected bail petitions of former chairman of Farmers Bank's audit committee Mahbubul Haque Chisty alias Babul Chisty in three graft cases.

Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order after his lawyer moved the bail petitions in the cases filed in 2019.

The first case was filed against Babul Chisty on charges of amassing Tk 37.38 crore on January 23 of 2019 while two other cases were filed on December 15 the same year on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 34.88 crore illegally.

More than 15 graft cases were also filed against him, his wife, his son Rashedul Haque Chisty and his daughter on charges of amassing and laundering huge amount of money through corruption in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

The ACC arrested Babul Chisty on April 10 of 2018 after a case was filed against him over his alleged involvement in loan scam.

On November 9 of 2021, another Dhaka court awarded three years' jail sentence to Babul Chisty in a case filed over Tk 4 crore money laundering.

In the same case, former chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha was also sentenced to 11 years' imprisonment.

ইশরাকের আইনজীবী ব্যারিস্টার এ এম মাহবুব উদ্দিন খোকন সাংবাদিকদের বলেন, হাইকোর্টের আদেশের ফলে ঢাকা দক্ষিণ সিটি করপোরেশনের (ডিএসসিসি) মেয়র হিসেবে ইশরাককে শপথ পড়াতে আইনগত কোনো বাধা নেই।
