Listed criminal shot at Ctg sea beach

Two persons, including listed criminal Md Akbar, alias "Dhakaiya Akbar", were shot by miscreants in Patenga Sea Beach of Chattogram city amid the tourist crowd tonight.

Police said Akbar, a listed criminal by police and also a close aide of Shibir cadre, Sazzad alias Boro Sazzad, of the port city's Baizid Bostami area, has been arrested several times with firearms over different charges. Later, he was freed from jail on bail.

Faridul Alam, inspector of Patenga Police Station, told The Daily Star that the incident took place at the local sea beach market installed by the district administration around 8:00pm.

"Akbar, along with five others, including a woman, was sitting in front of Shop No 28 and had placed an order for food. Suddenly, he was shot from the side and fell to the ground," he added.

On information, police rushed to the spot and sent him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Farid.

After the incident, his other friends fled the scene, so police are yet to determine what exactly happened there, he said.

Police said another person suffered bullet injuries but his identity could not be known yet.

Police are investigating the incident.

Sub-Inspector Alauddin of CMCH police outpost said, "Two bullet-hit persons were rushed to CMCH and they were admitted to the casualty ward."

According to police data and newspaper records, Akbar was held with two firearms by police from Lakshmipur district in December 2023.

Following the incident, panic gripped tourists until the filing of this report around 10:30pm.
