Jamaat demands immediate release of Azharul Islam

Jamaat-e-Islami today demanded immediate release of its Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam, who was sentenced to death by International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
In a media statement issued today, Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said Azharul, then acting secretary general of the party, is a victim of the then Awami League government's "conspiracy".
He said, "The fascist Awami League government filed false and fabricated cases against Jamaat leaders with the ICT aiming to eliminate its leadership."
Azharul was also sentenced to death based on false statement given in the court, he alleged.
On December 30, 2014, ICT-1 sentenced Azharul to death on charges of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
Azharul later filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, challenging the verdict where he claimed innocence and prayed for acquittal.
