HC confirms death for ex-JP lawmaker’s son for killing brother
The High Court today confirmed death sentence of Kabirul Islam, son of former Jatiya Party lawmaker Karimuddin Vorosha, for killing his younger brother -- Khairul Islam Vorosha -- in 2009.
The bench of Justice Syed Md Ziaul Karim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir delivered the verdict after hearing arguments on the death reference of the case.
If a lower court sentences any person to death in a case, its judgment is examined by the HC through hearing arguments for confirmation of the death sentence.
The HC confirmed the death penalty of Kabirul, now on the run, considering the trial court verdict was right and based on the documents and evidence, Kabirul's state defence lawyer Md Hafizur Rahman Khan told The Daily Star.
The lawyer said if Kabirul surrenders to the lower court concerned and submits an appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, challenging the HC verdict, execution of his death penalty will remain suspended till disposal of the appeal.
Police and family members said Kabirul opened fire on his younger brother Khairul at their "New Age Tobacco'' office on the sixth floor of Ali's Centre. Later, a murder case was filed.
On April 11, 2016, a Dhaka court sentenced Kabirul to death for murder of Khairul.
