The High Court today acquitted businessman Gias Uddin Al Mamun, a friend of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, in a money laundering case in which he was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.

The HC also scrapped the trial court verdict that on April 24, 2019 convicted Mamun and sentenced him to seven years in prison in the case.

The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the judgement after holding hearing on an appeal filed by Mamun challenging the trial court verdict.

Advocate Sabbir Hamza Chowdhury appeared for Mamun while Advocate Ashif Hassan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission during hearing of the appeal.

On September 22, 2011, the ACC filed the case with the Cantonment Police Station against Mamun. He is currently in jail in connection with different cases.

On April 29, 2012, the commission submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka, bringing allegation that Mamun siphoned off around 4,18,853 British pounds to the United Kingdom.
