Ex-Jubo Dal leader among five arrested over abduction of businessman

Five individuals, including former Khulna City unit Jubo Dal president Mahabub Hasan Piaru and Jatiya Nagorik Committee leader Imon Molla, have been arrested on charge of abducting a businessman, Nur Alam, in Khulna.
Based on their confessions, police later rescued Nur Alam, a resident of Gazipur, from a house in Bosupara residential area of the city.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the police conducted raids in various parts of the city from yesterday evening till early today leading to their arrests.
The other arrestees are Ziaus Sadat, a senior journalist of local daily Anirban; Imon's associate Joy Hasan and Sakib Rahman.
Md Taimur Islam, officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolitan Police, said that Nur Alam went to Bosupara where his son, Kowshik Ahmed used to reside.
On Friday night, he was abducted and confined at a house in Bosupara. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Tk 1 crore from his son, the OC said.
Being informed by the victim's son, DB police launched an operation. The first arrest was made when Imon Molla, a member of the city committee unit of Nagorik Committee, arrived in front of Hotel Grand Placid in Moylapota to collect the ransom. Based on his confession, police then conducted further raids, leading to the arrests of the remaining suspects.
Nur Alam's son filed a case in this regard this morning, the OC added.
A senior DB officer, requesting anonymity, told The Daily Star that Imon had previously extorted money from multiple individuals identifying him as Nagorik Committee leader and a student coordinator. Multiple allegations have also been made against Jubo Dal leader Piaru.
