Court sets Feb 14 for probe report submission in case against ex-SP Babul Akhter

A Dhaka court today asked Dhanmondi police to submit by February 14 the probe report in the case filed against former superintendent of police Babul Akhter and three others by PBI chief under the Digital Security Act.
The three others are Babul Akhter's brother Md Habibur Rahman Labu, his father Md Abdul Wadud Mia and journalist Elias Hossain.
Of the accused, Babul Akhter is now in jail custody while his father and brother are on bail. Another accused Elias Hossain is out of the country.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashek Imam passed the order after Md Rabiul Islam, an inspector of Dhanmondi Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, failed to submit the probe report today.
With today, police took four dates to complete the investigation into the case.
On September 27 last year, PBI Chief Banaj Kumar Majumder filed the case against Babul Akhter and three others with Dhanmondi Police Station on charges of spreading false and untrue information regarding Mitu murder case.
Mitu was stabbed and shot to death on June 5, 2016 when she was walking her son to his school bus at the Port City's GEC crossing.
In the case statement, Banaj Kumar said the charges of spreading false and baseless information in Mitu murder case, attempting to divert investigation, inciting communalism, and tarnishing PBI's image or Bangladesh Police's image were brought against the accused.
The case was filed over a video content made by Elias and circulating in online sphere that tarnished the image of Banaj Kumar and PBI as a unit of the police force.
