Court rejects Mamunul’s bail petitions
A Dhaka court today rejected three bail petitions of Hefajat-e-Islam's former joint secretary general Maulana Mamunul Haque in three cases filed with Paltan Police Station.
The cases were filed over the 2013 mayhem and the violence in Dhaka centring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in late March.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka passed the order after his lawyer Zainal Abedin Meshbah submitted three separate appeals against the rejection order of a lower court on May 4.
In the orders, the judge said the charges brought against Mamunul were found to be true on the basis of investigation and so his bail petitions were rejected.
A joint team of Tejgaon Division police and DMP's Detective Branch arrested Mamunul from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa in Mohammadpur on April 18.
The following day, Mamunul was shown arrested in the case filed on March 7 last year over vandalism by activists of the Qawmi madrasa-based organisation in the capital's Mohammadpur area.
He was placed on a seven-day remand in the case after being produced before a Dhaka court.
He was also shown arrested in 16 other cases filed with Paltan, Motijheel and Narayanganj's Sonargaon police stations.
Later, Mamunul was placed on a 30-day remand in 10 of those cases on different dates. Of them, 12 days' remand were granted in four cases filed with Paltan and Motijheel police stations while 18 days' remand were placed in six cases including a rape case filed with Sonargaon Police Station of Narayanganj district.
After his remands, Mamunul was sent to Kashimpur jail in Gazipur on June 5.
Police have so far arrested 22 top leaders of Hefajat-e-Islam including Mamunul for their alleged involvement in carrying out violence in May of 2013 and the violence in March this year in Dhaka.
All were placed on different terms of remand in the cases filed with Paltan, Motijheel, Jatrabari and Ramna police stations and they are now in jail.
