4 school students abducted by Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar, families say

Four school students have been abducted, allegedly by two Rohingyas, in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar.

The four -- Md Kayser, Mizanur Rahman, Jahedul Islam and Mijanul Islam -- are students of Sonarpara High School in Ukhia upazila. Of them, Jahedul is a class 10 student and the other three are class eight students.

According to the students' families, around 10:00am on Tuesday, a gang led by Rohingyas Jahangir and Ibrahim abducted the four, saying that they will take them to St Martin's Island.

After kidnapping the four, Jahangir and Ibrahim demanded Tk 5 lakh ransom for each of them over phone, the families alleged. The two Rohingyas are residents of Teknaf's Nayapara Rohingya refugee camp no. 26, and work as staff of "Batighar Cottage" on Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive in Himchhari Panchardwip area, the families said.

Kaysar's father Abdur Rahim said, his son and the other three students are acquainted with Jahangir and Ibrahim. After abducting them, the two Rohingyas have been beating them and also threatening to kill them, he said. "We have informed Ramu police about the incident," Rahim said.

When contacted, Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwarul Hossain said, "We have received a complaint from the students' families yesterday. Ramu police with Teknaf police have been conducting drives to rescue the abducted students."

Teknaf Police Station Inspector (investigation) Abdul Halim said that they started drives to arrest the kidnappers and rescue the students. Other law enforcing agencies are working too, he added.
