3 suspended policemen arrested for extortion sent to jail

Three policemen, who were suspended a year ago on charges of extorting money from people and committing robbery, have been sent to jail in a case filed for another incident of trying to extort money from a man in Dhaka's Maniknagar area on September 3, 2022.

The accused are suspended constables Belal Hossain, Hasan Ali and Nasidul Islam, Jamal Uddin Mir, officer-in-charge of Mugda Police Station, told The Daily Star tonight (September 5, 2022).

Although there are cases against them filed at Shahjahanpur and Jatrabari police stations in Dhaka for extorting money from people, they attempted to extort Tk 1 00,000 from a man in Uttar Maniknagar area by framing him as a drug addict, said the OC.

On September 3 night, the trio entered a house in the capital's North Maniknagar area and tried to take a person named Shahidul Islam to the police station, claiming him to be a drug addict and saying that if he gives Tk 1 lakh, he would be freed, OC Jamal said.

The three were in plainclothes and did not provide the name of the police station they came from, he added.

When Shahidul Islam's wife Ety Akhter got suspicious about the incident and called 999, a team from Mugda Police Station rushed to the spot and arrested the trio, said the police official.

A court sent the trio to jail yesterday (September 4, 2022) after Ety filed a case at Mugda Police Station against them, said OC Jamal, adding that they will apply for remand if necessary.

The trio was in the Rajarbagh Police Line barrack as reserve and welfare force constables of Dhaka Metropolitan Police after getting suspended.

Faruk Hossain, deputy commissioner  (media) of DMP told The Daily Star that the three arrested policemen will be sacked from their jobs if their guilt is proved in court.
