Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, alongside 61 Awami League leaders and activists, has been sued over the death of Sajal Mia, 20, a shoe factory worker, during student protests in the Shimrail area of Narayanganj on July 20 last year.

The accused include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, former lawmakers Shamim Osman and Nazrul Islam Babu, as well as Shamim's son Imtinan Osman Ayon and nephew Azmeri Osman.

The case was filed by the victim's mother, Runa Begum, at Siddhirganj Police Station in Narayanganj on Friday night, said Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Alam.

According to the case statement, Sajal joined the anti-discrimination movement on July 20 last year, when AL men allegedly opened fire on students near the Dutch-Bangla Bank area on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway. Sajal was shot in the abdomen and later died at a local hospital.

The complaint claims the attack was carried out under the direction of top AL leaders, including Hasina and the other accused.

Meanwhile, Kamrul Hasan from Bhuyapur yesterday filed a case with the court of Tangail Judicial Magistrate Rumelia Sirajam, accusing Hasina and 193 others of organising a "dummy election" and vote rigging in 2024.

Former minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, former lawmaker Soto Monir, former CEC Kazi Habibul Awal, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, and former Tangail deputy commissioner Mohammad Shahidul Islam are among the 193 accused.
