2 detained over attack on journalist in Gazipur

Two people were detained in connection with the attack on three people, including a journalist, during a BNP meeting in Gazipur's Kapasia yesterday.

After their detention, the army personnel handed over the detainees -- Farid Sheikh and Asfi Rahman -- to Kapasia police around 2:30am, said Joynal Abedin Mandal, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kapasia Police Station.

Meanwhile, Rocky Hossain, Jamuna TV cameraman of Gazipur district who suffered injuries during the attack, has been taken to Crescent Hospital in Dhaka's Uttara for advanced treatment, said the private television's district correspondent Md Palash Pradhan.

Apart from Rocky, Gazipur District BNP Convening Committee member Sakhawat Hossain Selim, and his driver Delwar Hossain were injured in the attack.

However, Journalist Palash said that the meeting, organised by the local BNP, began around 12:00pm at the Cheragaali intersection yesterday. A group of individuals riding 20 to 25 motorcycles stormed the venue and started vandalising the stage, chairs, and tables.

As Rocky and others were recording the incident, the attackers beat him and several others, Palash said.

He added that a case will be filed in connection with the attack.
