17 injured during clashes in Faridpur
At least 17 people were injured during a series of clashes between two groups over establishing supremacy in Saltha upazila of Faridpur today.
The clashes took place in Morhat-Aguldia-Jaijhap area under Gotti union during the early hours of today and this morning, reports our Faridpur correspondent.
Locals said supporters of ward-2 Awami League President Ayub Thakur and Khurshed Khan, who was defeated in the last union parishad elections as an independent candidate for chairman post, locked into clashes over establishing supremacy in the area.
Four to five houses were attacked and looted during the clashes, they said.
Confirming the incident, Md Suminur Rahman, assistant superintendent (Nagarkanda-Saltha Circle) of Faridpur police, said the first clash took place around 2am early today. On information, a police team rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Later, the two groups, equipped with locally-made weapons, again locked into clash, said the police official.
At least 17 people of both the groups were injured in the clashes, he said.
Of the injured, Salim Munshi (70) of Aham Jayjhap village has been admitted to Faridpur Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital.
Police later brought the situation under control by firing shotguns and tear shells, said the ASP, adding that additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avoid further clashes.
