Youth dies while trying to board cargo vessel to attend BNP's Barisal rally
A young man was killed after he was hit by a cargo vessel in Sadar upazila of Barguna yesterday (November 4, 2022) evening while boarding the cargo ship to reportedly attend BNP's Barisal divisional rally scheduled for today.
The deceased was identified as Sagir Mia (26), son of Idris Miah of Garjan Bunia village of Naltana union of Barguna Sadar upazila. He had a mobile repair shop at Garjan Bunia Bazar, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.
The accident took place at Naltona point of Bishkhali river in Naltona union around 6pm, said Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Barguna Sadar Police Station.
The OC said, "As far as we have heard, BNP men from Patharghata were going to Barishal by cargo ship to join the divisional general rally. When the cargo docked on the shore at Naltona point to take more people, a man named Sagir Mia was hit by the cargo while boarding and seriously injured."
Later, he was taken to Barguna General Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the police official said.
Md Shamsuzzoha Shams, a doctor on duty at Barguna General Hospital, said the man died before he was brought to the hospital. There are injury marks on the left side of his chest and his head.
Golam Kabir, former upazila chairman of Naltona union, said Shafiquzzaman Mahfuz, chairman of Naltona union backed by BNP, hired the cargo to take people to Barisal divisional rally.
When the cargo vessel coming from Patharghata was taken to the river bank at Naltona point, Sagir got stuck between a boat and cargo while boarding.
However, the correspondent could not reach any BNP leader in Barguna for comments in this regard despite several calls.
OC Ali further said no one from the family has lodged a complaint with the police station yet. If any complaint is received, police will investigate the matter and take legal action.
