Three drown, four missing in Jamuna
At least three people drowned and four others went missing after passengers fell overboard from an engine boat caught in strong currents of the Jamuna in Sirajganj's Chowhali on Thursday evening.
Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Enayetpur Police Station, said the boat, carrying over 70 passengers and bamboos, was going to Enayetpur Majar from Jamalpur.
When the engine boat reached near Enayetpur ghat, its boatman lost his control due to strong currents in the river. Most of the passengers fell from it.
Locals started a rescue operation with their boats and rescued most of the passengers, but seven went missing.
A team from Belkuchi fire service station rushed to the spot and recovered two bodies from the river, the OC said.
A diver team of Rajshahi fire service station recovered another body yesterday, the OC said.
Due to strong currents in the river, rescue operation was being hampered, the OC added.
The three deceased are Fuljan Begum, 50, Silimon Begum, 60, and Yeasin, 7, of Pachshira village in Jamalpur's Islampur upazila.
The three along with other villagers were going to Enayetpur Majar, the police officer added.
