7-yr-old killed in Savar gas cylinder blast

A seven-year-old girl died today after a gas cylinder exploded at Hemayetpur in Savar.

The blast took place at a tin-shed house in Jadurchar area of Hemayetpur around 2:00pm, reports our Savar correspondent, quoting police.

The deceased was identified as Sadia, of Shimultara village under Shaghata Police Station in Gaibandha.

She lived with her family in Jadurchar. Her father, Saidur Rahman, is a rickshaw-puller by profession.

On information, a team of fire service reached the spot at 2:10pm and recovered the body.

Before the firefighters could reach the spot, the fire was brought under control with the help of locals, Sabuj Mia, duty manager of Savar Leather Industrial City Fire Service, told The Daily Star.

Sadia's mother was cooking in an earthen stove outside her house at noon, next to a gas cylinder. At one point, the flame of the stove spread to the pipe of the gas cylinder, causing the explosion. The fire spread to the house killing Sadia on the spot, he added.

Rajib Kumar Saha, sub-inspector of Savar Leather Industrial Police Outpost, said the family brought a gas cylinder to their house yesterday. The explosion took place when the flame of the stove spread to the cylinder's pipe while cooking this afternoon.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family members, he added.
