AL still doubts victory
BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the opposition leaders and activists were being arrested, as the ruling party doubted its victory even if the opposition unexpectedly joined the election under a partisan government.
"So arrest the opposition leaders and imprison them to keep them off from election," the BNP acting secretary general told a discussion of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal at Bhasani Hall in the capital to mark Independence Day.
Fakhrul said the ruling party was trying to hold a "one-party" election, and asked the Awami League to face their political programmes politically, not through harassment of the opposition.
He also observed that the international media would be reporting issues like Padma bridge graft, and Hall-Mark, Destiny, and stock market scams within a few days.
At a human chain of Dhaka District Chhatra Dal in front of Jatiya Press Club, Fakhrul said it had been a routine work of police and the government to arrest the opposition leaders and activists and to file false cases against them.
Dhaka District Chhatra Dal organised the programme demanding unconditional and immediate release of BNP leaders, including Amanullah Aman, who were arrested during a raid on the party's Nayapaltan headquarters on March 11.
