6 kids drown in 4 dists
Six children drowned in Thakurgaon, Khagrachhari, Bogra and Jhalokathi districts yesterday and the day before.
Two primary school students drowned in Nasi River at Jagtha village under Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon yesterday.
The deceased were Masuda Akhter, 08, daughter of Siddiqur Rahman of Jaghta village and Goutam Roy, 10, son of Profullah Roy of Bhelatoir village under the same upazila.
Both were students of Class-II at BGB Government Primary School in the upazila headquarters.
Quoting local people, officer in-charge of Pirganj police station Mehedi Hasan told this correspondent over cell phone that six students of the school went to take bath in the river in the morning.
At one stage, Masuda, who did not know how to swim, cried for help when she slipped into deep water.
Her classmate Goutam jumped into the river to rescue her but both drowned.
In Khagrachhari, two more kids drowned in a pond at Dewanpara under Taindong union in Matiranga upazila yesterday.
The deceased were Mohammad Junayad Islam, 5, son of Mohammad Abu Taher and Kamrul Islam, 4, son of Jamal Uddin of Dewanpara, reports our correspondent.
Quoting family members, police said, cousins Junayad and Kamrul were playing together. After sometime, their family members found them 'missing'. Later, with the help of neighbours, they recovered the bodies of both the kids from a pond after two hours of hectic search.
In Bogra, a schoolboy drowned while diving into a cannel from a bridge at Poalgachha Singabari village in Shahjahanpur upazila on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Shakil Hossain, 13, a Class VII student of Poalgachha Muslim High School and son of Sazzad Hossain alias Bhola of Beragari village in the upazila, reports UNB.
Locals said Shakil along with some 5-7 boys was in a frolic of diving into the Bhadai cannel from a bridge on the Garidah-Jamadar Pukur road at about 11:30 am.
At one stage, after giving a jump into the cannel, Shakil went deep down the water.
Later he was rescued and rushed to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
In Jhalakathi, Afsana, 3, daughter of Babul Hawladar of Baroikaran village in Nalchity upazila drowned in a pond. She fell in the pond while playing on its bank at about 5.00pm.
Later she was rescued and taken to Sadar Hospital where the on duty doctors pronounced her dead.
