171 killed since January
Political violence claimed lives of 171 people while 6,449 were injured in clashes over the last three months, said Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a legal aid and human rights organisation, in a report published yesterday.
Hindus in 41 districts were attacked, says the report, adding that at least 420 temples, 163 houses and 162 shops of the community were demolished or burnt in the attacks.
Based on newspaper reports, ASK estimated that some 230 clashes followed the sentencing of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee to death in a war crimes case.
A total of 44 activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami and 10 activists of the ruling Awami League and the BNP died in the clashes.
Ninety-six people died in custody of law enforcers and in "crossfire" and police shot dead 39 people.
People's lack of confidence in the law was manifest in the lynching of 34 people. The report also says that as many as 296 women were raped across the country during the period.
