109 BNP MPs demand judicial probe into Jail Killing case
One hundred and nine MPs of opposition BNP have demanded judicial inquiry into the 1975 jail killing case headed by a Supreme Court Judge for the sake of fair trial, reports UNB.
In a joint statement to the press yesterday, they said: "We believe, the real facts will be unveiled if a fresh inquiry is carried out headed by a senior judge of the Supreme Court, and it is essential for the sake of justice."
The BNP lawmakers said some political leaders, including KM Obaidur Rahman MP, were implicated in the case conspiratorially in a bid to stall the opposition movement, harass them politically and tarnish the image of BNP.
"We strongly condemn such a move of the government and demand immediate judicial probe of the jail killing," they said and asked the government to set free Obaidur Rahman, Nurul Islam Manzoor and Shah Moazzem Hossain before the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
The statement said since its inception, the present government had resorted to killing and arrest of the opposition leaders and workers.
It said the arrest and detention of Obaidur Rahman and Nurul Islam Manzoor implicating them in the 22-year-old jail killing case are part of the process of government's harassment and repression. "It is a clear manifestation of the government's vendetta and autocratic character," the statement added.
The BNP lawmakers said: Before submitting charge sheet in the cooked up case, public statements were made from the top level of the government and by other leading figures issuing threats and dishing out falsehood to influence the legal process. Such statements tantamount to showing disregard to the law and the judiciary.
"It is clear that the (jail killing) case is politically motivated," they added.
