107 houses gutted in fire incidents in 5 districts
At least 107 houses were gutted in fire in Lalmonirhat, Netrakona, Pabna, Rajbari and Dinajpur districts on Sunday.
Seven houses of three Hindu families were gutted in a 'mysterious' fire at Namuri village in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat early yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The houses might have been set afire by their rivals over a land dispute, said OC Mossabberul Islam of Aditmari PS after visiting the spot Sunday noon.
Locals said, Gobinda Chandra Sheel, 45, and his two brothers Baburam Sheel and Barayan Chandra Sheel had ten houses on their homestead.
Gobinda said, he and others of family were yet to know the reason behind the fire.
"I have land dispute with some people but they live about seven kilometres away from my residence," he said.
His younger brother Baburam said that the gang might have used petrol, so the fire broke out at all the houses at a time.
"With the help of local people, we could save only three houses," he said.
In Netrakona, at least 55 houses were gutted in separate fire incidents in Purbadhola and Durgapur upazilas early Sunday, reports our correspondent.
Police and locals said, at about 1:30am, at least 25 houses were gutted at Mujibnagar Ashrayan Prokolpa in Durgapur upazila.
Locals said, the fire originated from an electric short circuit. The loss in the fire may go up to Tk 30 lakh.
In another fire, at least 30 houses were gutted at Bodhi village under Purbadhola upazila at about 12:30am.
Police and locals said, the fire originated from an earthen oven at the house of Rukku Mia and spread to the adjacent houses.
In Dinajpur, at least 12 houses of seven families were gutted in a fire in Khansama upazila early Sunday.
Goods worth Tk 2 lakh were damaged in the fire, reports our correspondent.
Police said that the fire originated from a mosquito coil at the house of Md. Shamser Ali of Chhatianagar village at around 1:30am and rapidly engulfed 11 other houses.
In the last 12 days, more than 130 houses have been gutted in three fire incidents in the upazila.
In Rajbari, a five-year-old girl was roasted alive during a fire that gutted 28 houses at Bhagbisnupur village in Pangsha upazila on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Sharifa Khatun, daughter of Shariful Islam of the village, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
Locals said the fire originated from the kitchen of the house of Shariful Islam and soon engulfed the adjoining houses around 11:45pm.
As Sharifa was asleep she could not come out from their burning house. Later, her charred body was recovered, said the father of the hapless girl.
The extent of losses from the fire could go up to Tk 15 lakh, fire service sources said.
A devastating fire in Pabna damaged 15 houses at Puran Mashumdia village in Bera upazila of the district on Sunday evening, reports our correspondent.
Fire fighters and locals said, the fire originated at the kitchen of Abdul Hakim's residence at about 5 pm and rapidly spread to 15 houses of the village.
The fire gutted the houses of Abdus Samad, Abul Kalam, Goni Khan, Sabuz Khan, Amin Uddin and Rajab Sheikh. It damaged goods and property worth Tk 50 lakh, affected villagers claimed.
