1,000 sued over Chapainawabganj, Sirajganj clashes

More than 1,000 opposition activists have been sued over Friday’s clashes in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj and Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj.
Police filed two cases against 513 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, on charges of attacking law enforcers and obstructing them from discharging duty during the clash in Shibganj, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent.
Sub-inspector (SI) Dipak Kumar and SI Shahidul Islam filed the cases with Shibganj Police Station Saturday morning, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station, told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, over 500 leaders and activists of BNP and its key ally Jamaat have been sued on similar charges over the clash in Belkuchi, reports our Pabna correspondent.
SI Habibur Rahman filed the case mentioning 29 names with Belkuchi Police Station on Friday night, said
Rezaul Islam, an assistant sub-inspector at the police station.
At least five people were killed and 50 others, including eight policemen, were injured during clashes between opposition activists and law enforcers in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj on Friday over arresting Jamaat men.
