Indian held with 3kgs of gold

Customs officials yesterday detained an Indian national with three kilogrammes of gold worth around Tk 1.5 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital yesterday morning.
Mahesh Kumar Gopal Das, 46, was caught while he was passing through a green channel and the gold was hidden inside the handles of his two pieces of luggage, said Kazi Md Ziauddin, joint commissioner of customs. He came from Dubai from a flydubai flight.
UU convocation logo launched

Youth jailed for stalking girl

A mobile court yesterday sentenced a youth to 25 days' imprisonment for stalking a school girl in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.
The convict Mehedi Hasan, 19, of Chuadanga Sadar, had been stalking the girl, a JSC examinee, in front of her examination centre.
Yesterday locals caught Mehedi around 12:30pm while he along with his friends was stalking the girl. However, his accomplices managed to flee, police said.
Mob kills alleged robber in Sylhet

An alleged robber was killed in a mob beating in Shibganj Senpara area of Sylhet city yesterday.
The deceased, Iqbal Hossain, 33, of Sunamganj died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while three of his accomplices are undergoing treatment.
Police said when a gang, numbering six to seven, started cutting grills to enter a house around 2:00am, locals and police reached there and caught four of them following the house members' information.
Road crashes kill three, injure five

Two people were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Savar yesterday.
In Ashulia, Poran Sheikh, 55, of Tangail died and five people were injured when a human-huller hit them while they were standing beside Dhaka-Tangail highway at Baipail.
At Rajalakh Farm junction, an unidentified youth died when a bus ran him over on Dhaka-Aricha highway.
Meanwhile in Dinajpur, Karim Uddin, 22, of Shalki village died when a motorcycle hit him in Shalki area of Dinajpur Sadar.
Woman's body recovered in Savar

Police recovered the body of an unidentified woman, aged around 25, from beside Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, yesterday.
On information, police recovered the body from a ditch adjacent to the highway at Radio Colony.
Miscreants might have been killed the woman after rape and dumped the body here at night, said police. A case was filed.
Liquor worth Tk 1.08cr seized

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (east zone) recovered 1,800 bottles of whiskey worth Tk 1.08 crore from Chittagong Port yesterday.
Tipped-off, coast guard members chased an engine-run wooden boat around 2:30am during a drive at the outer anchorage, Coast Guard officials said.
Being chased, two to three smugglers dumped the sacks, containing the bottles, into the water and fled.
Novo Nordisk observes diabetes day

Marking World Diabetes Day, Novo Nordisk, world's largest insulin maker, yesterday organised a rally in different cities across the country, including one in the capital's Shahbagh, for promoting healthy lifestyle to fight diabetes.
The International Diabetes Federation has recently announced that the number of people suffering from diabetes is now around 387 million and is expected to reach 592 million by 2035, said a press release.
Two-thirds of the diabetic patients are found in cities and those who move to cities are significantly more likely to develop diabetes than rural people, it added.
