BRTC bus catches fire in capital

An articulated bus of the state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) caught fire on Airport road in the capital yesterday.
The fire might have originated from the over heated engine of the Uttara-bound bus, said fire service officials.
Fire fighters doused the fire. No casualty was reported.

 

Man held with smuggled gold at Shahjalal airport

Customs officials detained a man and recovered 36 gold bars, worth Tk 2.2 crore and weighing 4.2kg, hidden in a water pump at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital yesterday.
Khurshid Alam, of Chittagong, was a passenger of Fly Dubai.
Following Alam's suspicious movement, the officials challenged him while he was crossing the green channel with the pump and recovered the bars.

 

On duty traffic cop dies in road crash in capital

An on duty traffic police constable was killed after being hit by a bus near Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the capital yesterday afternoon.
Mozaffar Hossain, 40, of Tongi in Gazipur, was attached to Uttara Traffic Zone in the capital, said Banani police Sub-inspector Abu Bakar Siddique.
A bus of Nirala Paribahan from Tangail knocked him down around 4:45pm, he said, adding that they seized the bus while the driver fled away.

 

Journos protest attack on Samakal's Barisal bureau chief

Journalists in Barisal city yesterday formed a human chain protesting the attack on Samakal bureau Chief Pulok Chatterjee on Wednesday.
The programme, organised by the Barisal Press Club before Aswani Kumar Hall, was attended by the leaders from different media organisations, socio-cultural and political groups. Later, they staged a rally.

Man's body with firearm recovered

Police recovered the body of an unidentified man, aged around 27, with firearm from the bank of Boro Walia Lake yesterday.
The body was decomposed and there was no visible injury mark, said police.
Earlier, on Wednesday, police recovered another unidentified man's body from the same area with arms and three bullets.

 

Chapainawabganj Journalist  Forum, Dhaka formed

Rtv News Editor Anwar Haq and New Age Chief Reporter Khadimul Islam have been made president and secretary respectively of the 11-memebr executive committee of newly formed Chapainawabganj Journalist Forum, Dhaka.
Other office bearers include Channel 24 News Editor Biplob Shahid (vice-president), Channel i Senior Reporter Soma Islam (joint secretary), senior online journalist of The Daily Star Fardaus Mobarok (organising secretary) and Zahangir Alam (finance secretary).

 

Three restaurants fined in Ctg

Two mobile courts led by Chittagong district administration yesterday in the city fined three restaurants Tk 1.30 lakh for various irregularities.
In Stadium area, Oh Restaurant was fined for preparing food with rotten ingredients and not having business license and Red Chili for charging extra money with product price and not having license.
In Garibullah Shah Mazar area Handi restaurant was fined for charging extra money.

 

House caretaker killed in Sylhet

Police recovered the body of a caretaker of a house in Khadimnagar area of Sylhet city suburb yesterday.
The deceased was Zamshed Ali, 70, of Jagannathpur in Sunamganj.
Police suspect that Ali Ahmed and Jibon, who used to stay with Zamshed and are missing since morning, might have killed him for money as Zamshed withdrew Tk 50 thousand from bank on Wednesday.
The body bore several injury marks.

 

Feb 2 RU violence victim gets Tk 1.2 lakh

The mass communication and journalism department of Rajshahi University yesterday handed over Tk 1.20 lakh to its student who was injured in an attack by BCL activists, backed by police, on February 2.
Akhtaruzzaman Rajib, a third year student, was hit in his right eye by a bullet when he with other students was protesting on the campus against fee hikes and evening shift master's courses.
Doctors suggested that he get treatment abroad. Teachers urged the public to extend their help towards Rajib.
