College student hacked to death

A college student was hacked to death and 10 others were injured in an attack by rivals over taking water from a deep tubewell at Paschim Bakra in Satkhira's Ashashuni yesterday, said police.
The deceased, Habibullah Sarder, 24, son of Alimuddin Sarder, was an honours second year student of Satkhira Government College.
Around 25 people attacked them over disputes on electricity bill of the motor used for lifting water from the government tubewell supervised by Habibullah's father.
Witness of murder case killed

The prime witness of a murder case was hacked to death by unidentified criminals at Achalongpara in Manikchhari upazila of Khagrachhari yesterday noon.
Mohammad Mominul Haque, 55, son of Abdul Malak of Kalapani in the upazila, was the prime witness of local doctor Gofran murder case lodged in 2009.
Quoting locals, Manikchhari police Officer-in-Charge Safiqul Islam said Mominul was attacked with iron rods and sharp weapons on his way to a mosque.
Eight houses gutted in Ctg

Eight tin-shed houses were gutted by a fire in Bakalia of Chittagong city yesterday afternoon.
Fire officials said the fire originated from an electric short circuit in one of the houses near Moydar Mill area and damaged valuables worth around Tk 2 lakh.
Fire fighters doused the fire after an hour long effort.
3-wheeler driver killed in Kushtia

Miscreants killed a three-wheeler driver at Baradi in Kushtia Sadar upazila and took away his vehicle yesterday.
Aminul Islam Rana, 25, of Jugia village, went out with his easy bike on Thursday night and did not return, said police.
The body with its throat slit was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for an autopsy.
Indian clothes of Tk 80 lakh seized

Border Guard Bangladesh seized a huge amount of smuggled Indian saree, salwar kameez, and cloth, worth Tk 80 lakh, in different incidents in Benapole yesterday.
Acting on a tip-off, BGB members made the seizure in Amrakhali and Sadipur while the smugglers fled away.
The goods were handed over to Benapole customs. A case was filed.
Cousins murder man in Ctg

A person was beaten to death allegedly by his distant cousins in Anwara upazila of Chittagong yesterday.
The deceased was Nepal Chandra Das, 57, of Gujra area in the upazila.
His son Robin Das alleged that his distant uncles Sumon, Manu, Babla and Ranajit attacked his father on a dispute over catching fishes in a pond collectively owned by the four, said Anwara police.
Nepal was declared dead at Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 12:30pm, said CMCH police.
Cop's stolen arms recovered, 2 held

A stolen pistol, its magazine and five rounds of bullets of a sub-inspector of Nasirnagar police was recovered from Alakpur in Brahmanbaria after seven months yesterday.
Police also arrested two people Tabarok Raja, 27, and Mojibor, 30, who were carrying those, on the spot.
SI Rafiqul Islam, investigation officer of the case, said seven rounds of ammunition and one magazine, which were also stolen, were yet to be recovered.
Hanging body of woman found

Police recovered the hanging body of a woman from village Jigatala in Bakshiganj upazila of Jamalpur yesterday morning.
The deceased was Nureda Begum, 35, wife of Abdur Rashid of the village.
Neighbours discovered her body hanging from the kitchen rafters of her house and informed police.
The body was sent for an autopsy. Police are yet to ascertain whether Nureda committed suicide or was murdered.
