Two shot, three beaten up by supporters of Jubo League leader

Two supporters of a ward councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation were shot and three others were beaten up by the supporters of a Jubo League leader in the city on Tuesday night.
Shohag and Shishir with bullet wounds were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while the others were undergoing treatment at Narayanganj hospital.
Shiddirganj police said supporters of Matiur Rahman alias Sundar Mati, convener of Jubo League Shiddhirganj thana unit, attacked Councillor Sirajul Islam's men in Sona Mia Market area and at one point opened fire on them over establishing supremacy in Shiddirganj area. Mati said he had no knowledge about the firing but the beating occurred due to village arbitration.

 

Biman Airlines' cleaner arrested with 5kg of gold at airport

Customs officials detained a cleaner of Biman Airlines with 40 gold bars, weighing around 5kg, worth Tk 2 crore, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital yesterday.
On information, the officials recovered the bars from the boots of Joynal Abedin, 45, of Pabna, in No-6 Boarding Bridge area, soon after he came out after cleaning an aircraft of Malaysia Airlines that landed around 11:30am, said Kamrul Hasan, assistant commissioner of the customs.
Two mechanical helpers of Biman Airlines, Shahiduzzaman and Nurul Islam asked Joynal to bring the bars, which were kept under a passenger seat, for them, said Kamrul, quoting Joynal. The duo, however, managed to flee.

 

Road crashes kill six

Four construction workers were killed and 25 others injured when a truck carrying them fell into a canal after colliding head-on with a pick-up van at Uttar Wapda Bazar in Sadar upazila yesterday, reports our Noakhali correspondent.
The deceased were Belal Hossain, 30, Jahid, 28, Nur Nabi, 50, and Ajad, 27.
In Natore, a truck driver, Sarowar Hossain, 55, of Jhenidah, was killed and his helper injured when two trucks collided head-on at Koyen in Baraigram upazila yesterday.
In Chapainawabganj, Doli, 25, of Sadar upazila, died when a truck hit her in Ranihati Bazar area of Shibganj upazila yesterday. 

 

Cuba, Algeria, Azerbaijan greet Hasina on re-election

Cuban President Raul Castro Ruz, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal and Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasi-zade have congratulated Sheikh Hasina for assuming office as the prime minister of Bangladesh, said a foreign ministry press release yesterday.

 

NU publishes 2nd admission merit list

National University will publish the second merit list of the students seeking admission in the honours programme under the 2013-14 session today.
Candidates can get the results by sending SMS, NU<space>AT<space>Roll no, to 16222 from any mobile phone from 3:00pm onwards.
Besides, the results will be available at www.nu.edu.bd/admission from 6:00pm, says a press release. Candidates from the first merit list who have applied for changing subjects will be informed about the subjects through SMS.

 

JCD, Chhatra Moitree clash at New Degree College in Rajshahi

Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree clashed on the Rajshahi Government New Degree College campus yesterday over establishing supremacy.
The college authorities halted all academic activities for the day to prevent the situation from escalating, said Abdul Wahed Sarker, principal of the college.
The clash occurred when some activists of the college unit of JCD threw brick chips at a procession brought out by Moitree men on the campus, said Sirajum Munir, officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station.  
Witnesses said there was tension between the two groups over establishing supremacy at the college. 

 

2-week Buet debate contest ends

A two-week debate championship, organised by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), concluded at the university on Tuesday.
More than 100 national level teams participated in the competition, says a press release.
Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, vice chancellor of the University of Asia Pacific and former professor of civil engineering at Buet, was present as the chief guest at the concluding ceremony.

 

Student team from Tokyo due today

A team of ten students of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies will arrive in Dhaka today on a week-long visit to familiarise with the Bangla language and culture.
The students studying Bangla will make the tour under “Visit Bangladesh” programme by the country's foreign ministry. They will interact with the officials and representatives of various offices and organisations.
