SC stays Niko case against Khaleda

The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday upheld the High Court (HC) order staying the proceedings against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Niko corruption case.
After holding the hearing, a full bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin passed the order dismissing the leave-to-appeal petition filed by Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) against HC order.
On July 9 last year, HC stayed the case proceedings against Khaleda upon a writ petition.
The HC also issued rule upon the government and ACC to show cause why the case should not be quashed.
The ACC filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia and several others on December 9, 2007 on charges of abusing power to award a gas exploration and extraction deal to Canadian company Niko.
Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq appeared for Khaleda, while Advocate MA Aziz Khan argued for ACC.
