Acting chairman of Bogra Pourasabha sued
The Department of Environment (DoE) has filed a case against Bogra Pourasabha acting chairman Syed Anwarul Islam Babla and ward commissioner Ershadul Bari Ershad for felling 21 fruit bearing trees of Edward Park here without official approval.
Mizanur Rahman, junior chemist of the DoE, Rajshahi, filed the case with Sadar police station against them yesterday. Babla is a former president of Bogra Jubo Dal, youth wing of BNP, and Ershad is general secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami ward committee here.
The complainant alleged that he had come to know from a gardener that Babla and Ershad ordered him to fell 17 coconut trees, three large mango trees and one jackfruit tree to construct a market and a slaughterhouse. Abu Zafar Reza, assistant engineer of the municipality supervised its work on October 18.
He further alleged that the accused persons have denuded the park and caused degradation of environment by their work.
Later, aggrieved people resisted construction work of the market and the slaughterhouse. The Daily Star published the news of tree felling on October 19.
