Adhunik Bangla songs get limelight
Shakila Zafar (top-left) and Nahid Sultana perform at Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts.
Popular artiste Shakila Zafar performed at the musical soiree organised regularly by Bengal Foundation, "Pran-er Khela." As a homage to the approaching Bengali month 'Ashadh' (the first month of monsoon season), and to perhaps articulate everyone's yearning for some respite from this searing heat, the diva beautifully rendered some rain songs. The soiree was held on June 11 at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts.
The event also featured promising singer Nahid Sultana, who won the best singer award in 2006 in 'Adhunik Songs' category, at the talent hunt "Bengal Bikash" (organised by Bengal Foundation).
Nahid was the first to perform and she started with the song "Shukh pakhirey pinjira tor." The artiste performed some popular 'adhunik' songs -- both Bangladeshi and Indian (West Bengal), including "Sagar-er teer thekey," "Akashey aaj ronger khela," "Pordeshi megh," "Nishi raat banka chand akashey" and more. A resident of Khulna, Nahid took music lessons from Ustad Rasheduddin Talukder.
Shakila Zafar presented some of her favourite 'adhunik,' Nazrul Sangeet and semi-classical songs. "Boley re papihara" (from the Hindi film "Guddi") was her first song. "Esho hey shajolo ghano," "Ajhor dharaye brishti eley," "Shey chena pothey," "Bhulitey parina," a Nazrul Sangeet "Kholo kholo kholo go duar" and other songs entertained the audience for hours. One of the leading singers of the country, Shakila Zafar recently completed 30 years of her musical career.
Zahid Hossain, Mohammad Muniruzzaman, Chandan Dutt, Monwar Hossain Tutul, Richard Kishore and Hanif Ahmed accompanied the artistes on keyboard, flute, 'tabla,' guitar and percussion.
To promote and popularise traditional Bengali songs, Bengal Foundation has taken several initiatives such as workshop, talent hunt, releasing albums and more. "Praner Khela" is a part of these initiatives.
The programme was sponsored by Eastern Bank Ltd.
