8 convicts get bail
A High Court (HC) bench yesterday granted bails to eight convicts including three Awami League (AL) leaders, two BNP leaders in separate corruption cases.
The HC bench of Justice MA Wahab Miah and Justice Marzi-Ul Huq granted them bails upon separate appeals filed against their convictions in the trial court.
The court granted bail to former AL state minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, ex-AL lawmakers Hazi Selim and AK Mohiuddin, ex-BNP state minister Ziaul Haque Zia, ex-BNP lawmaker Nadim Mostafa, ex-BNP finance minister Saifur Rahman's son Shafiur Rahman Babu, ex-Al lawmaker Moqbul Hossain's son Masudur Rahman Masud, and ex-member of National Board of Revenue Maksudur Rahman.
Except Nadim, the rest seven obtained bail in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charge of amassing illegal wealth. Nadim was granted bail in two different criminal cases in Rajshahi in which the trial court had convicted him.
They were tried, convicted and sentenced to imprisonment in absentia for different terms by the trial court.
Meanwhile, another HC bench comprising of Justice Mozammel Hossain and Justice Bazlur Rahman Sana yesterday sanctioned bail to former AL lawmaker Joinal Abedin Hazari in two different arms cases in which he was sentenced to two years imprisonment in 2002.
According to the HC decision the bail orders will continue till disposal of the appeals.
