Wolfsburg buzzing
The city of Wolfsburg partied hard into the early hours of Sunday morning after their football team captured their first ever Bundesliga title with a 5-1 win over Werder Bremen.
Coach Felix Magath has led the Wolves to their first domestic honour and booked their Champions League berth while strikers Edin Dzeko and Grafite set a new record for a strike partnership of 54 goals in a season.
After Saturday's win over Bremen, the new champions made their way to Wolfsburg's town hall in a convoy of open-top cars through a sea of green-and-white flags as over 100,000 fans cheered the team as they lifted the championship shield.
"It's absolutely stunning - a dream," said 23-year-old Bosnian striker Dzeko.
"Two years ago, when I came to Germany, I never thought we could become German champions. We're going to be celebrating for a very long time."
Having won his third Bundesliga crown as a coach, Magath will now leave to take over as coach at Schalke 04.
"A dream has come true here," said Magath.
"I didn't believe that it was possible before the season began, but taking the whole campaign into account, you could certainly say that we are a deserved German champion."
Wolfsburg's Lord-Mayor Rolf Schnellecke presented Magath's team with medals before the shield was hoisted in front of jubilant fans.
For the Lower Saxony city of Wolfsburg, the home of car manufacturers Volkswagen, the German title is a long-awaited reward after years of mediocrity.
"There's a buzz humming around the whole city," said Schnellecke.
"Wolfsburg deserved the title with their blend of attacking football.
"Felix Magath has presented us with the greatest gift we could ever have imagined.
"This title win will breed legends and generations after us will speak about this."
