Kenyan parliament dissolved
Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki on Monday dissolved the country's parliament, paving the way for elections expected in December.
But the Electional Commission of Kenya is yet to announce the date for the country's fourth multiparty polls since pluralism was re-introduced in 1992.
"I hereby dissolve the ninth parliament of the Republic of Kenya with immediate effect," Kibaki said in a televised national speech.
"I appeal to all political leaders and Kenyans in general to ensure that we have peaceful, free and fair general elections."
Kibaki, 75, is seeking reelection for a second and final term.
