RU students to miss Pahela Baishakh
Teachers and students of Rajshahi University will not be able to welcome Bangla New Year on the campus due to unscheduled closure of the university.
The authorities closed the university indefinitely on March 13 following a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) that left one Shibir leader killed and 100 others injured.
Many students became frustrated to know that the student bodies, cultural organisations, fine arts and Bangla departments of the university will not take up any programme on the campus to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year, tomorrow.
Faisal Mahmud, a student of Rajshahi City College, said he along with his family members comes to the campus every year to celebrate Pahela Baishakh. But he expressed his frustration seeing that no arrangement has been made by the university authorities or the fine arts department to celebrate the day.
Earlier, the students of the fine arts department and cultural activists of the university demanded reopening of the university before April 14. But the authorities did not pay heed to the demand.
Prof Amirul Momenin Chowdhury, chairman of RU fine arts department, told The Daily Star that the authorities asked them not to organise any programme on the campus on Pahela Baishakh.
